Les Trois Mousquetaires: playing Buckingham in French

Updated: 9 hours ago
I got the opportunity to play the Duke of Buckingham in Audible’s French-language production of Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers). I was approached by Maryne Chouzenoux at BLYND. Buckingham made sense.

BLYND handled the voice recording, mixing and music creation for the French production. The Studio Anatole team created BLYND in 2020, and Franck Gombert adapted Alexandre Dumas’s novel for this production.
Buckingham’s part in this adaptation isn’t extensive, but it’s still incredible to be involved in a full-cast audio production on this scale. The cast includes Camille Cottin, Julien De Saint Jean, Karidja Touré and Lucien Jean-Baptiste.
I also had the pleasure of being on the same project as people I work with regularly: Julien Dutel as Athos, and Sébastien Mortamet as the young Planchet. And I have to mention Lise Gillet’s Anne of Austria, who is, of course, very much involved in Buckingham’s adventures.
An intense romantic with a very dangerous sense of entitlement
What stayed with me about playing him? He’s intensely romantic, probably spoilt, and he doesn’t take no for an answer. He wants things, and he’ll take enormous risks to get them. That gives D’Artagnan and his friends plenty of drama to deal with.
To me, he a bit of a billionaire. Playing little games, risking betrayal and putting other people in danger along the way. That’s my take on what makes him interesting to play: all that romance, intensity and entitlement wrapped up together.
A little Englishness in a French performance
I was asked for a slight English accent, but not too much. The Englishness comes through more in the musicality of his voice. I added a bit of rasp and intensity, making him a bit of a Renaissance loverboy.
Meet some of the cast
Here are four of the voices behind this production, in clips shared by Audible. The interviews are in French.
